First thing was to replace the faucet with a new taller one. We did this
before replacing the sink. |
When we found the right sized single, stainless steel sink to fit our
counter the work began. |
Stripping off the old formica was pretty simple. Problem was with the kauri wood
fiddles. They were not only screwed on but also glued. No way they were coming
off. We were able to break them off though and re-use them as you'll see below. |
The hole for the sink had to be modified as it the new sink was not as wide but
deeper, both front to back and top to bottom, than the old sink. You can see the
new strip of plywood epoxied on to narrow the hole. Epoxy was also used to
smooth the edges where we had to break off the fiddles and to fill the holes
where the old faucets used to be. |
We have a large storage area just to the left of the sink. It has a lift off
cover with some ugly ceramic tile on it. We were going to make a flush lid for
the storage area and have the wood cut out but decided to stay with the old
cover. We plan on eventually chipping out the tile and gluing a cutting
board in it's place. |
The
plywood counter is now ready to glue down the new formica. |
Faucet, fresh water spigot and salt water spigot go in before the sink is set
in. |
Sink is caulked onto new countertop and weighted down while caulking sets up for
a few days. |
Sinks and faucets in and usable. Last job is finishing the fiddles and attaching
them to the sides of the counter. |
Ana chisels all the old tile off the counter lid. |
New tile is glued onto the lid and grouted. |
Finally finished. We may have to put a fiddle between the sink and the
storage box but are going to wait and see how it works without one. Also, this
photo was taken before the counter lid was re-tiled. |
